We must learn from people who had a mission similar to ours with Mother Teressa being one of my best hero when it comes to this Topic she said '' Members must adhere to the vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience, as well as a fourth vow, to give whole hearted free service to the poorest of the poor" I wont talk of the negative but focus on the positive. Mother Teresa was widely admired by many for her charitable works and before I go into my article would want to highlight some sayings of Mother Teresa on her journey to Poverty Alleviation as my lessons come out of these.
Mother Teresa Quoted Sayings :
- "I was to leave the convent and help the poor while living among them. It was an order. To fail would have been to break the faith."
- She wrote in her diary: “ "Our Lord wants me to be a free nun covered with the poverty of the cross.Today, I learned a good lesson. The poverty of the poor must be so hard for them. While looking for a home I walked and walked till my arms and legs ached. I thought how much they must ache in body and soul, looking for a home, food and health. Then, the comfort of Loreto [her former congregation] came to tempt me. 'You have only to say the word and all that will be yours again,' the Tempter kept on saying ... Of free choice, my God, and out of love for you, I desire to remain and do whatever be your Holy will in my regard. I did not let a single tear come."
- Mother Teresa received Vatican permission to start the diocesan congregation it was to cater "the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for through out society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone."said in her own words.
- In one of her speeches, she said to the audience "know poor people in your own home and local neighborhood," it meant feeding others or simply spreading joy and love. She continued : '' the poor will help us grow in sanctity, for they are Christ in the guise of distress,"calling students and residents of the city to give to suffering members in their community.
- When Mother Teressa was asked, "What can we do to promote world peace?" She answered "Go home and love your family."
- she said: "Around the world, not only in the poor countries, but I found the poverty of the West so much more difficult to remove. When I pick up a person from the street, hungry, I give him a plate of rice, a piece of bread, I have satisfied. I have removed that hunger. But a person that is shut out, that feels unwanted, unloved, terrified, the person that has been thrown out from society—that poverty is so hurtable and so much, and I find that very difficult."
- " abortion is the greatest destroyer of peace today. Because if a mother can kill her own child – what is left for me to kill you and you kill me – there is nothing between."
- "A beautiful death,is for people who lived like animals to die like angels—loved and wanted."
- "By blood, I am Albanian by citizenship, an Indian. By faith, I am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the world. As to my heart, I belong entirely to the Heart of Jesus."
- She was undeterred by criticism about her firm stand against abortion and divorce stating, "No matter who says what, you should accept it with a smile and do your own work."
these were some of the qoutes in works of Mother Teresa at the time of her death Teresa in her charity missionaries had over 4,000 sisters, and an associated brotherhood of 300 members, operating 610 missions in 123 countries. There were hospices and homes for people with HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis, soup kitchens, children's and family counselling programs, personal helpers, orphanages, and schools. The Missionaries of Charity were also aided by Co- Workers, who numbered over 1 million by the 1990s. In tribute, Nawaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, said that she was "a rare and unique individual who lived long for higher purposes. Her life-long devotion to the care of the poor, the sick, and the disadvantaged was one of the highest examples of service to our humanity." and former U.N. Secretary-General Javier Pérez de Cuéllar said: "She is the United Nations. She is peace in the world."
If you were not motivated by the above read if you didn't feel a rush through your blood saying I want to do the same and I can because I learnt a.b.c... Then I suggest you stop right here for when it comes to tackling poverty its not a hobby a game or a place to relax and watch time fly to me Rule #1 is that like Teresa: Its a calling, thats rule #1 for me.
This is a serious mission.
- its not a game to feed people. - its not a game to provide shelter. - its not a game to protect. - its not a game to fight disease. - its not a game to fight poverty. - its not a game to watch life suffer.
In overall this mission is a serious war. Every battle we encounter in the battlefield must be won Soldiers that march to fight poverty must have a bar 100% full with passion to see that poverty is extinict yes ofcourse its hard but its possible not only is it possible but its also necessary.
Now that we are on the same page lets go onto Rule #2 We Take Action.
We cant just talk we have to walk the talk action when Mother Teresa decided to act on her venture she then acted ,she took action evident from this qoute "I was to leave the convent and help the poor while living among them. It was an order. To fail would have been to break the faith."
so what do we Zimbabweans do I mean the intrested parties we cannot call on for poor people to foward ,we can meet them in town or in our fancy building we cannot focus only on homes ,opharnages etc.. Lets go were the poor come from before they enter a home or opharnage I mean the way to stop homes been full opharnages been full ,streets been full with street kids and beggers is to attact the root cause of all these which means we have to go into ''COMMUNITIES'' we got Hopely Farm ,we got Epworth,we got Bhobho , We got Mbare, we got Seke, we got Ghettos have we stepped into those areas?maybe spent a week or 3days leaving in such areas so you can understand the level of Poverty that has striked there ?how can you talk of poverty and understand the pain if you want to fight it in the comfort of your Home?when a soldier goes to war he gathers his armor and goes to the battleground with hope that he will someday come back home alive with a victory or dead with a victory worth to be remembered in the words of Teresa '' While looking for a home I walked and walked till my arms and legs ached. I did not let a single tear come."Teresa left the comfort zone her home and went into the life of the poor she felt the feeling of how painful it is to be poor unlike many so called poverty fighters she was not looking for fame, credit or any sort of reward thats directed to her she was seeking to help the poor. Im not saying that the rich must feel guilty remember I said I want to talk with someone on the same page with me that he is rich much do as he pleases for he has worked so hard to attain success its not his fault. Reason I say atleast spend a week in these communities is so you understand how these people are living ,what do they need, what makes them drift apart from others, what cant they do that we can and many stuff you can its your research ,from mine I will tell you the following :
Doing my research which I still am I noticed that Poverty is an enemy that has control its root cause has developed problems like Hiv/aids,prostitution,drug abuse, ealry marriages, divorces, opharns, high death rate, unemployment, decrease in academic pass rate, robbery, infidelity, street kids,Commuter Bus Touts (Windi),lack of progress in sports ,the list is endless but this is what I could brief up.
Small girls at the age of 16 are falling pregnant and going of to stay with responsible person being called the husband If you think I'm lying its because you are one of those poverty fighter who fight poverty in the comfort of your luxury couch, going deeper better that one who is married atleast her she can wait for divorce or if favoured she struggles the rest of her life, what about this one from the age of 16 to 43 years olds are living on prostitution money ok better the problem on a 30 year old what of a small small girl of 16-22years where does her future lie?mind you this is the future of tomorrow the doctors we need to assist us,the lawyers ,the police, the accountants but no already her life expectancy is below 30 maximum 40 and there one thought life begins at 40 one day I went to one I asked her how much is it she said $2 short time then I said $2 in shock of how can it be so cheap then before I could continue conversation she quickly asked ''ok how much do you have?'' meaning there was actually room for negotiation from the $2 then I implied im okay with the $2 then she went with me to a room before she could take off her clothes I quickly stopped her and asked how much it would cost for a night then she said $6us would do then I said fine I will give $6 for you to tell me about yourself I dont want to sleep with you to her this was a lotto the the following was her telling me about her and the community :.. If it was easy to kill myself I would than the life I'm living she said her mother passed away and she grew up with her dad who lived on pushing carts and collecting metal scrap for resale ,he couldn't pay for her school fees so she the had to end her academic career at form 1 level with nothing to do she started selling tomatoes but it was profitable as people didn't buy and they would soon rot , I personaly rule Vending as a way to live thats a way to survive and when one is on survival mode there is a possibility of death we can say people are empowered when they are vendors cant we?go in the evening at 10pm at corner Robert Mugabe and Julias Nyerere you see women with tomatoes there sleeping yep thats right they sleep right there whole night cause they make atleast $15 a week so if one is to go home daily $7 will deplete to transport alone so tell me does can you say you have presented an opportunity to this person to eliminate poverty in her life? So she is the mother of a young girl I suppose would you be suprised if that girl goes to sleep with boys or men No!!! Cause she is HUNGRY!!! On that word I go back to my lovely catch of the night as things were tough on her Dad they would sometimes sleep without eating till her father at times never came home some nights only earths surface would know were he would be having financed his daughter a couple of times and the daughter failing to make an impact they both seemed to have gotted fed up with the process the father nomore financing as of the girl nomore wanting to go to the market getting help from friends she survived a few weeks till the cat had to be let out the sack her friend said '' my mom suggested we tell you how we are surviving I dont have a father in South Africa that sends money to us 'well this was what she had been told' my mom was abonded by my dad as he was able to take care of us my mom started to sleep with men so we atleast feed ourselves, have something to wear and cover our heads, I then decided to follow suite though my mom didn't approve it she fell ill and saved money could'nt sustain us she was left with no option as I too was hungry so I then started selling my Body which I suppose you do we can go together when you are ready and given it thought'' she ended, leaving the girl with pity of how loving this people had being to her whilst they live in such ways ,she felt guity she said for her denying would make her feel like she has rebuked in denying her friend and mothers offer. Two days later she joined nor did she had the choice she said I was ''HUNGRY'' that word again.
'' We are usually the target for men new young girls so i was making money sleeping with 4 to 6 men a night and I would support my friend and mom and thats how I got into this at first it was hard and I would cry men would think its pleasure but I would be actually feeling the opposite'' she said, at this point the vision was all clear in my head I was hurt with tears forced out I was hurt ,angry and for a moment I wondered if God doesn't see these type of people's suffering. So I went on to ask her if you get a job would you take or you prefer this kind of job?, do you like these job? She said [Translated to English]'' I will do any job but the reason I'm doing a bad job is that the good one's are not available, if they arise I dont have qualifications required so I do whats able to make me survive, have clothes and feed myself.'' I then understood that these people have lost hope but deep down they know if given an opportunity they can leave bad I call desparate measures to make a living that cant sustain them anyway. I rounded up the conversation and said to her '' the next time you see me I will be coming to save you but you have to be ready to save yourself too.'' she started crying I felt her pain she was young, desperate, alone and most of all HUNGRY. I left and left her my business card with my number should could call when in need as of her she didn't have a phone she offered me to sleep over and I denied just so I could prove to her there are people out there who care for others well being and Im full of HUMANITY so I could be a testimony. Let me say I will sharing more and more related to this article i've ended in the beggining where you were expecting more isn't? Well do me a favour atleast decide to partner with me in attacking poverty we cant expect the goverment to cater the people.
More than 20000 children don't have shelter, food, education, clothes and future in overall its our responsibility you and me to challange ourselves and say : I can be the hand that helps the next person in need.
The results we are facing today is what came out of the planning we did yesterday, penalties we are facing is what we miss planned yesterday. Jobless youths, lack of education I'm totally against the rural area education systems there are so pathetic full of bullsh*t children wake up 6am must be at school do some digging before lessons for lazy teachers I'm talking of a child that walked 12km to go get academic education not labour work ,then this child starts sleeping in class teacher takes stick to hit child comooon maaaan where is HUMANITY its so stupid im very angry and who designed this system I suggest he/she and his system go to HELL!!! . We must be fair Harare,Mrewa,Chipinge,Mt Darwin etc... All the children from all these areas should be treated equally.
We totally failed yesterday when we planned our education system today children run away from school some cant afford it. 12km to school just because I walked you cant say '' I walked do the same no pain no gain '' when you walked you know the pain what kind of person are you without a heart to feel pity on the child ?instead of '' I know what it feels like the pain you feel after the walk and labour work makes it hard to concentrate I go back home I didn't have a candle i would use the moon aswell as farm at night or ealry morning to help my grandma and mother if I atleast invest in this child a better future is certain I have to educate him/her'' this is what we need.
So what am I saying Education is one of the most essential tools in the fight to end poverty. RESULTS and RESULTS we must Identify the lack of education, especially for girls, as a root cause of poverty. One small way you and I can help is by donating books and other classroom supplies. Supply Books of how to develop Africa starting from were you are these sets a high target for the learner as he/she aims high and guess what ? '' in order to hit the mark we must aim above it '', we will then send the supplies to schools in need create competitions ,awareness these are the leaders of tomorrow we must plan today what we expect to see tomorrow, we must invest in today's resources which are our children our leaders that will lead leaders that follow them.
Stay tuned for more I haven't started yet this is just the beginning photo's and videos will be uploaded theme is Me & The II Brothers Are Eliminating Poverty
